Getting Good Results
The 'O' level and 'A' level results are out. There are students who cried in joy while there are those who cried in disappointment. For students who had worked hard, they got the results that they deserved and for those who didn't, they would just have to try harder the next time round. But does hard work always equals good results? During my time, that would have been true but now, I doubt so. The emphasis now is on being creative and being able to think out of the box. Rote learning is out and so is the 'cut and paste' method. One of the reasons why students nowadays are so stressed up, is simply because they have not got used to the new ways of learning. Most are still being taught by teachers, tutors and even parents who had learnt through the old methods. To them the methods had served them well so they feel that the methods would serve the children just as well. Well, the fact is, time has changed and so has learning methods. Some of the premier and even neighbouring schools have started teaching students using more innovative methods and the students have produced encouraging results. But sad to say, I have heard of parents who still put their poor children through hours and hours of tuition and assessment chunking (most of the time, students do assessment without understanding, they just do it to please their parents). And when their children don't do well, they will set aside even more time for more tuition and assessment. But they failed to understand that it's not the amount of time spent that is important, it's the amount of actual learning taking place that is. It's the quality that counts, not the quantity. Different people have different methods of acquiring their knowledge and skills and different styles of learning, thus each individual should be allowed to follow their instinct and to learn at their own pace. To get good results, one not only need to work hard, one must also work smart by using the correct methods. To all those who are still struggling with their studies, it's high time that you re-examine your learning methods and to adopt one that is both effective and productive.
